Marijuana is Legal in Canada: Seemed Appropriate to Review Kush “High” Volume Mascara

KUSH High Volume Mascara

Milk Makeup’s KUSH High Volume Mascara

Hi everyone! As you may have already heard, yesterday was a very historic day in Canada. Recreational cannabis is now officially legal. We are only the second country in the world to have legalized it.
Brace yourselves even friendlier Canadians are comingIn light of that fact, I thought it would be a good time to do a review of  Milk Makeup’s KUSH High Volume Mascara, the only mascara I know of that contains actual cannabis oil. Why you might ask? Well, according to Milk Makeup:
Ever since its inception, Milk Makeup has wanted to create a product that showcases the amazing properties of cannabis oil. When they started talking about coming out with a fully vegan volumizing mascara with fibers, they knew they couldn’t use beeswax, a common binding component in mascara formulas. Enter: cannabis oil. Hemp-derived cannabis oil fuses the heart-shaped fibers to your lashes without fallout. It whips the formula into a creamy texture that allows for smoother application on lashes and an easier, tug-free removal. It also provides an additional conditioning benefit. KUSH Mascara is the vegan way to get major volume and healthier-looking lashes in one hit.” Continue reading

Urban Decay Naked Cherry: The thing that broke my no-buy

Urban Naked Cherry review
Well, hello again! It has been quite some time since my last post. Since May 1, I have been on a one-year sabbatical from my regular Librarian job. As awesome as this is, it has meant that I have been very busy traveling and doing research. It also means that I am on reduced salary, so I have basically been on a no-buy and have really been avoiding makeup blogs, social media and YouTube in order to not be tempted! Working from home, I’ve also not been wearing makeup on the daily, so my blog has definitely been neglected. Somehow, I still was unable to avoid the news that Urban Decay was releasing a new eye shadow palette, and when I heard it was cherry themed, it literally made me break my no-buy. Continue reading

Make Up For Ever’s New Artist Color Eye Shadows

Make Up For Ever newly reformulated Artist Color Eye Shadows

MUFE’s newly reformulated Artist Color Eye Shadows

Was anyone else surprised to find out last fall that Make Up For Ever had completely reformulated their entire line of eye shadows? It seemed like they had just did that. I was definitely surprised because I had really loved the Custom Artist Palettes they had brought out in fall 2014. Just 3 years later, all 210 eye shadows and matching customizable palettes were scrapped to make way for the newly reformulated Artist Color Eye Shadows. Continue reading

DECIEM: The Abnormal Beauty Company Skincare Products Review

The Ordinary Matrixyl 10% + HA and Lactic Acid 10% + HA skin serums

The Ordinary Matrixyl 10% + HA and Lactic Acid 10% + HA

Hi everyone! While I was in Toronto at the Bite Lip Lab on Queen Street West, the guys who worked there recommended that I stroll a few minutes down the street to the Abnormal Beauty Company. They both raved about it and said they swear by their products because they are high quality but also low priced. I’m glad I listened to them and stopped into the company’s flagship store. I thought I’d review some of the DECIEM skincare products I picked up from brands like The Ordinary and NIOD. Continue reading

A Visit to MAC (Toronto Shopping Part 2)

MAC haul
As promised, after my annual trip to Toronto, I’m back with some of the goodies I got at MAC. As I mentioned in my last post, I always make time to go to the Eaton’s Centre and hit the Sephora and MAC because there is no Sephora or MAC near where I live. As much as I adore online shopping, I find its always way better to get to see the products in person, check out what’s new, and get advice from the people who work there who really know the products. MAC is such a fun store to go into in person. I had some things I needed to restock, enough empties for a Back-to-MAC freebie, and I was also on a mission to find a pale blue/green eye shadow. Continue reading

Sephora Visit & My Mini Brow Makeover (Toronto Shopping Part 1)

Goodies from the Eaton's Centre Sephora

Goodies from the Eaton’s Centre Sephora

At the end of January I was off to Toronto for the annual national library conference. While I’m there, I always try to make time to do some of my favourites and sometimes try out new things too (like going to the Bite Lip Lab). I always make time to go to the Eaton’s Centre and hit the Sephora and MAC because there is no Sephora or MAC near where I live. I had a great trip to Sephora this year! Continue reading

My Visit to the Bite Lip Lab: Bespoke Lipsticks!

Bite Lip Lab goodies

So many goodies from the Bite Lip Lab

Recently I had to go to Toronto for work and I knew that while I was there I absolutely had to go to the Bite Lip Lab. Bite Beauty is a Canadian company and all of their lip products are made in small batches from food-grade ingredients, i.e good and safe enough to eat (hence the name “Bite”). I have many of their products, like their Lip Scrub, Amuse Bouche Lipsticks, Lip Pencils and new Multisticks. The really cool thing is that they also have Lip Labs in Toronto, San Francisco and New York, where you can get custom made lipsticks! How cool is that?

Here is a quick little video I made to give you an idea of how mind-blowingly awesome it is to have your very own lipsticks made just for you right before your eyes:

What I Got at the beautyBOUTIQUE Spend Your Points Event

Chanel lipstick and nailpolish and Guerlain Lipstick

Redeeming Optimum points online at the beautyBOUTIQUE

In Canada, one of our largest national drugstore chains, Shoppers Drug Mart, has a rewards program called Optimum points. The points you earn have a cash value and can be redeemed for most any items in the store for up to a maximum of $170 CAD. My favourite way to redeem my points is at their beautyBOUTIQUE, which carries high-end brands. There are lots of beautyBOUTIQUE locations in Canada, like the big one in the Eaton’s Centre, but just not near where I live. Luckily you can order online! They’re changing the Optimum program and merging it with another points program this month, so last month there were “spend your points” events, probably to entice people into redeeming their points prior to the merge. I was able to redeem my 50,000 points for $105 CAD (an extra $20). Here are the high-end goodies I got for my points. Continue reading

I Heart the Besame Snow White Collection!

Besame Snow White Collection

Some things I ordered from the Besame Snow White Collection

I really love Besame Cosmetics – the packaging, the whole vibe and philosophy behind all of their retro vintage-inspired beauty products. I’m also a huge fan of everything Snow White, as evidenced by my 2016 Halloween costume:

Snow White makeup and hair

Halloween 2016

As soon as I saw the limited edition Besame Cosmetics Snow White Collection in my Instagram feed I just about nearly freaked out. The only problem? I live in Canada. I did order from Besame once before in 2013, and the brokerage and customs fees through UPS were $55.00 on top of the exchange rate from USD for the order. Although I loved the products (you can check out my post), particularly the Classic Color Lipsticks, I was reluctant to order from them again. Luckily, my Dad was wintering in Florida. So I had my order delivered to his address and then he mailed it to me through Canada Post. Hooray! Continue reading

My First Laura Mercier Lipstick

Laura Mercier Lip Parfait Creamy Colourbalm

Laura Mercier Lip Parfait Creamy Colourbalm

Hi everyone! Today’s post is a quick review of a new lipstick I picked up the last time I was at Sephora. I have heard really great things about the Laura Mercier lippies but have never tried one. I recently got one of the Laura Mercier Lip Parfait Creamy Colourbalms. Don’t you just love the name “Lip Parfait”? Continue reading

NARS Velvet Shadow Stick Review

NARS Velvet Shadow Stick in Oaxaca

NARS Velvet Shadow Stick in Oaxaca

Last year I got really into cream shadows, like the MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pots and the Revlon Colorstay Creme Eye Shadows. When I saw the NARS Velvet Shadow Sticks featured in a YouTube video, I was intrigued. Nearly all of the cream eye shadows I’ve tried (like the Chanel Illusion d’Ombre or the Maybelline Color Tattoos) have been in pots. I was curious to try a cream formula that was in a stick. The NARS Velvet Shadow Sticks are touted as “a creamy, blendable eyeshadow packaged in a convenient, portable stick” and come in some truly stunning shades. Continue reading

A few things from the MAC 25% Off Sale

MAC 25% off sale haul

I love a 25% off sale!

In December, MAC had a sale of 25% off items from its permanent collection. My order only arrived two weeks ago. Living on an island in the middle of the frigid North Atlantic means that sometimes I have to wait ages for online shopping purchases to arrive, plus the holidays and some extremely stormy weather didn’t help matters. I wanted to share with you what I’d picked up at the sale. Continue reading

MAC is Reading My Mind: The Prissy Princess Palette

MAC Prissy Princess palette

MAC Prissy Princess palette

You know how everyone seems to be paranoid nowadays that everything we do online – everything we buy, every site we visit – is being tracked and used to carefully craft ads targeted directly at us? I’ve always pooh-poohed such notions…until I saw the MAC Prissy Princess Palette. Clearly, MAC has perfected some sort of futuristic, mind-reading technology because it has made a palette that seems to be tailor-made just for me! First of all, the packaging: Pale pink! With polka-dots! Come on, MAC, that’s just not fair. And its adorably called “Prissy Princess”? Upon first glance, I really didn’t even care what was inside. I totally wanted it. Continue reading

MAC Lip Duos

MAC Lip Duo Cherry and Cockney

MAC Lip Duo Cherry & Cockney

Over Christmas I visited my sister, and we made a little trip to the MAC store in Halifax. I love going to MAC in person because there is no MAC store where I live. We had an awesome SA who showed us some of the new MAC Lip Duos and helped us try some on. I think the duos are a neat idea. You get a lip pencil and lipstick combo for less than what it would cost to buy them each separately. My sister bought Chicory/Brick-o-la and, can you believe it, it was her first ever MAC purchase!? I decided on Cherry/Cockney. However, I noticed that I had some of the lip pencils and lipsticks from the other duos, so I’m going to do some swatches from three of the other MAC Lip Duos for you in this post as well. Sephora Favourites: Give Me Some Nude Lip

Sephora Favourites Give Me Some Nude Lip

Sephora Favourites “Give Me Some Nude Lip” Lip Kit

When Sephora was offering their $25 off promotion in December, in addition to picking up the Bite Beauty Champagne Discovery Lip Set I also couldn’t resist the Sephora Favourites “Give Me Some Nude Lip” Lip Kit. I had really enjoyed Sephora’s “Give Me Some Bold Lip” Lip Kit. I love the idea of getting to try out sample sizes of popular lip products for much less than it would cost to get the full size of all six items. The Give Me Some Nude Lip kit is $33 CAD, but to buy all six separately would be $84 CAD! I’ll jump right in and tell you what I thought of the six nude lip picks in the kit. Continue reading

2017 Favourites!

2017 favourites

2017 favourites

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you all had a great 2017. Personally, I am definitely looking forward to 2018! I had meant to get my 2017 favourites post up sooner, but I ended up being stuck in Nova Scotia for several days longer than anticipated. So many flights here were delayed and cancelled due to weather. Canadian winters! But luckily WestJet was super nice about it and even sent me $250 toward my next flight. Shout out to WestJet!

This time of year I always enjoy looking back over the past 12 months and creating a post about my yearly favourites and I really love checking out other peoples yearly favourite posts too. So, here are some of the products I have enjoyed the most in 2017. Continue reading

Fantastic Spot Treatment & Inexpensive Dupe

Dr. Lin Acne Spot Corrector VS drugstore dupe
Hi everyone! I love samples. Its a great way to discover new products. Its how I discovered my favourite mascara, the Guerlain Maxi Lash, for example. A long while back, when I was placing a Sephora order online, I selected as a sample, the Dr. Lin Skincare Acne Spot Corrector. I’d been using it for at least 6 months or so, and then about a month ago I used it up. I wanted to do a review as well as let you know about a less expensive dupe. Continue reading

How About an “Anti-Haul” Post?

Hi everyone! I have been seeing these “anti-haul” videos and posts everywhere lately and I think they are pretty interesting. For anyone not familiar, an “anti-haul” is when you talk about items that have recently been released that you don’t have any interest in purchasing, for various reasons. Its like the exact opposite of a wish-list. I have often found that a hyped new item will come out that I’m seeing everywhere, that everyone seems to be talking about, but it doesn’t hold any particular appeal for me. I had never thought to post about items that don’t interest me, but I have enjoyed some other anti-haul videos and posts, so I thought I would give an anti-haul a try. Continue reading

Burt’s Bees Tinted Balm, Tinted Oil & Another Lipstick

Burt's Bees Tinted Lip Balm, Tinted Lip Oil, and Lipstick
Hi everyone! I’m back with a review of some more of the Burt’s Bees lip products. I’m a big fan of this brand and I love their lip balms. Lip balm is one of the most essential items in my life! I did a previous review of some of the Burt’s Bees lip balms as well as their lipstick in Orchid Ocean. I really wanted to try out another shade of the Burt’s Bees lipstick, and while I was swatching, I also picked up two additional Burt’s Bees lip products I hadn’t tried before; the Tinted Lip Balm and the Tinted Lip Oil. Battle of the Makeup Wipes: One Fav & One Fail

Neutrogena and Bioderma makeup remover wipes review
As handy as makeup removing wipes are, I don’t use them every day. I have a whole night-time skincare routine that I normally stick to, and to remove my makeup I use Bioderma Sensibio H2O cleansing and make-up removing water with the Quo Luxury Cotton Facial Pads (which are a dupe for the pricier Shiseido Facial Cotton). But every now and then, isn’t it so convenient to have some makeup removing wipes on hand to quickly take your makeup off and cleanse when you’re just too tired to go through your entire routine? I also really like makeup removing wipes for traveling. I had a bit of a hard time finding fragrance-free makeup wipes though, so for everyone out there like me with sensitive skin, I thought I would review the two fragrance-free makeup removing wipes that I’ve tried. One has become a re-purchased fav,  and one was a huge fail. Continue reading

Revlon’s New ColorStay Creme Eye Shadows: MAC Paint Pots Dupe?

Revlon's ColorStay Creme Eye Shadows

Revlon’s new ColorStay Creme Eye Shadows

I have to admit, I haven’t been overly enthusiastic about many new drugstore products recently, but I was excited to try Revlon’s new ColorStay Creme Eye Shadows. These came out in the U.S. about a year ago, but I’ve only recently seen them in Canada, at least in my local drugstore. Oddly they aren’t on the website but they are on the site. Not all my local stores had them, but I was able to find them at Shoppers Drugmart.

If you follow my blog you know I’ve been really into my MAC Paint Pots lately (you can see my review of Groundwork and Frozen Violet). I was curious to see how the Revlon ColorStay Creme Eye Shadows compared to the MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pots. Are they a dupe? Continue reading

MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pot in Frozen Violet

MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pot in Frozen Violet

If you follow my blog, you may have seen my post about MAC’s Pro Longwear Paint Pot in Groundwork which I have been loving this fall. When I was in Toronto recently, I had a looooong wait in Pearson airport, so I did what any normal, makeup obsessed person would do and headed straight to MAC to swatch some Paint Pots. I love a MAC in an airport – what an amazing idea! There were several gorgeous Paint Pots I liked. Two were not in stock – Camel Coat and Tailor Grey (both in the land of matte, taupey goodness). The shade they did have in stock was Frozen Violet. Continue reading

Who Can Resist the Sephora Minis?

Sephora mini sizes

Can you get past the Sephora line without being tempted by the minis?

The last time I was in Sephora, I was waiting in the check-out line surrounded by shiny, tempting, mini-sized products and of course the next thing I knew, some of them *mysteriously* ended up in my basket. They get me every time. I can never resist the lure of all of the adorable miniatures and add-ons in the Sephora line. Partly, I love anything miniature, but I also love that you can often sample higher-end products this way at a lower price. Continue reading

What I Ordered During the Sephora VIB Sale

My Sephora VIB sale items

My Sephora VIB sale items

I love seeing what people chose to pick up at Sephora’s 20% off fall sale. I often use the sale to finally purchase an expensive item on my wish-list or to try out some new products. This year, however, I was totally practical. I decided to save money by restocking some of my staples. I ordered five items that are products that I use everyday. Continue reading
